THE Provinces
In 1921, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. implemented a system of supervisory districts, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s structure. This initiative was proposed by George F. David II, the third Grand Polemarch and the first to hold the position without being directly mentored by the Alpha Chapter and the Founders. The concept of dividing the fraternity into districts was inspired by his father, a Presiding Elder of the A.M.E. Church.
Grand Polemarch David II introduced the division of the fraternity into three districts, each overseen by a leader: Past Grand Polemarch Irven Armstrong managed the first district; Harrison R. Duke, the second; and Harold M. Tyler, the third. These initial districts later evolved into four regions.
In 1925, during the 15th Grand Chapter Meeting, Fifth Grand Polemarch Earl B. Dickerson officially redefined the terminology, changing REGIONS to PROVINCES and REGIONAL DIRECTORS to PROVINCE POLEMARCHS. At that time, the fraternity established the following provinces: Eastern, Middle Eastern, Central, Great Lakes, Northwestern, Western, Southern, and Southeastern.
Today, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. has expanded to 12 provinces, continuing to uphold this vital organizational framework that fosters leadership, unity, and achievement across the brotherhood.
