A Legacy of Brotherhood & Service
Founded in 1921, the Durham (NC) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., is a cornerstone of the Durham community, rooted in a rich history of academic excellence, civic engagement, and fraternal brotherhood.
A PIONEERING BEGINNING
The Chapter's origins trace back to the visionary leadership of Leo Bruce, C.O. Pearson, Lee Bynum, and A. Moore Shearin, former members of the Delta Chapter at Wilberforce University. Their dedication led to the Chapter's chartering on September 12, 1921, making it the first graduate fraternity in Durham.
A DISTINGUISHED CHARTER LINE
The Chapter's inaugural members, including prominent physicians, businessmen, and educators, laid the foundation for a legacy of service.

Within a few short years, the chapter welcomed esteemed individuals such as James E. Shepard, founder and first president of North Carolina College at Durham (now North Carolina Central University), and business pioneers W.G. Pearson, C.C. Spaulding, and E.R. Merrick.
